AFH concludes “Exposing False Narratives” Program for Syrian Women Journalists

Arabi Facts Hub (AFH), in partnership with Women Who Won the War, has concluded the program "Exposing False Narratives: Advanced Training for Syrian Women Journalists", which ran for two weeks during April and brought together 30 Syrian women journalists from inside and outside Syria.

This program forms part of ongoing efforts to support and empower Syrian women journalists by equipping them with tools in fact-checking, investigative journalism, and the analysis of gender-targeted discourse. It incorporates data journalism methodologies and digital investigation techniques, all within the broader mission of combating misinformation and inauthentic behavior online.

An Intensive Five-Session Training Program

Held from April 10 to 24, the program consisted of five virtual training sessions delivered over two weeks (two sessions per week), totaling 10 hours of training. The sessions were led by a distinguished group of Arab journalists and trainers specializing in investigative journalism, open-source intelligence (OSINT), and data journalism.

The sessions covered the following topics:

  • Investigative Skills in Women’s Issues – led by Mais Katt, investigative journalist and founder of Women Who Won the War.

  • Fundamentals of Fact-Checking in Gender-Based Topics – led by Anas Ben Zrief, international trainer and expert in fact-checking and open-source research.

  • Mechanisms for Uncovering Coordinated Digital Campaigns Against Women – led by Shorouq Yasser, investigative journalist specialized in OSINT investigations.

  • Discourse Analysis Against Women Using Data Journalism – led by Maha Salah Eldin, investigative journalist and fact-checker specializing in data analysis, and Communications Lead at Arabi Facts Hub.

  • How to Write an Investigative Story Proposal – led by Osama Al-Sayyad, investigative journalist, filmmaker, and Operations Manager at Arabi Facts Hub.

Call for Investigative Story Proposals

At the end of the program, participants were invited to submit proposals for investigative stories focusing on inauthentic behavior and hate speech targeting women online. The best proposals will receive technical and financial support to help participants develop publishable investigations for local and regional media platforms, under professional editorial supervision.
